Miami Heat free agency coup bolsters The Summer Groove

The buzzer sounded at the end of the Summer Groove's All Star Basketball game not only brought an end to a great week of charity, partying and fundraising for Alonzo Mourning and Dwyane Wade, but it also brought a ceremonial end to the biggest year in NBA free agency that kept us in the media analyzing, thinking and pontificating as to where the prized free agents would land.

Think about it. How awkward would it have been if Dwyane Wade would have spurned the only NBA city he has known, to go back home to play for Chicago or New York, and then come back to his former city and host a week full of charity events? Weird right? Well thankfully to the mind of Pat Riley, the financial know how of Mickey Arison, and the recruitment of Wade, we didn't go through that awkwardness.

The Summer Groove is a staple in this community and has been for many years. The buzz surrounding the Miami Heat going into this season, was bolstered and helped take the Groove another level this year, and that is a good thing.

The 14th Annual Summer Groove, a yearly week of charitable fund raising, parties, and community events brought out not only star power to the already star riddled Miami area, but raised money for local South Florida programs and initiatives supported by Alonzo Mourning Charities and Wade’s World Foundation. Participants took part in a golf tournament, a comedy show, a youth summit, a youth basketball clinic, a block party, a benefit gala and an all star basketball game.

We got a chance to hang out at the Benefit Gala on with sponsors and celebrities from tv, sports and movies. Roland Martin from CNN. Zo's former Georgetown buddy Dikemebe Mutombo. Movie actress Gabrielle Union. Former Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson. All of these names and more, came together in the name of charity, and it was great.

On Sunday, stars from the basketball world came together for an all star basketball game. Boxer Floyd Mayweather coached one squad, while rapper/actor Common coached the other. Boston Celtic star Rajon Rondo, showed up, but remained on the bench for the entire game. Darius Miles, Brandon Bass, Aaron Afflalo, Dorrelle Wright and Heat legend Tim Hardaway all participated as well. No Bosh. No Lebron. Fittingly I think they decided to stay away, so that Zo and D Wade could be the center of attention of their event.

In between a few alley oops that garnered some oohs and aah's, Wade playfully entertained the crowd with long distance three's and dunks, giving us a little bit of preview of things to see in the upcoming season. And what a season it should be.

Not Larry Hughes PLEASE??? Hughes offense cost Cleveland the finals. His ORtg vs. DRtg, playoff Offensive Rating = 8 to 10 points lower. A-I, Iverson if he will take a 7th or 8th man role??? J-Will OR sign Jarvis Varnado, with Bosh, Lebron and Wade all scoring in the paint, we can't have too many shot blockers in the middle can we???
