Fever Pitch

At least this go-around of the flu in the Marlins clubhouse
isn’t as bad as the last time; Josh Johnson’s already back with the team, and
set to pitch tomorrow (Tuesday). Yes he missed his start yesterday, but you
know because of the workhorse he is, he had to be feeling awful.
He said that if yesterday’s game had been a night game
rather than a 1:10 start, he would have tried to pitch, but his whole body just
ached yesterday morning. He spent the day in a bed in a hotel room of all
places, because he had already moved out of his apartment in Hallandale.
The game wasn’t on TV there for some reason, so he followed
it on the Internet, drugged up on TamiFlu; he was not tested for Swine Flu, but
was told the TamiFlu would take care of either that or the regular flu so he
was in the clear.
His whole body just ached, especially his head and neck, he
felt nauseous most of the day, and he had a 101.5 fever. His temperature went
down today, and he and teammate Nick Johnson saw a doctor in the AM in Miami.
Johnson & Johnson were then cleared to jump on an 11:40
am flight out of Ft. Lauderdale to meet the team in Atlanta – landed around
1:30 pm. Nick is still feeling under the weather, so we’ll see when he gets
back on the field. JJ however as I mentioned earlier is set to pitch tomorrow
and then on Sunday in Philly for the final game of the regular season.
JJ was happy he only missed his spot in the rotation by two days,
because he can now easily hit that 200 innings mark which he really wanted to
reach this season; he's at 199 1/3 at the moment. He was upset he couldn’t do that and be there for the team
yesterday, but in the long run, everyone would rather have him healthy and
pitch two more times then risk something worse.
The team has advised him to take it easy today, though he
was stretching with the team and shagging balls during BP. His throat and chest
are still a little achy, so he said that he’s drinking more fluids than we
could imagine in order to knock this bug out of his system as soon as possible.
NOTE: Cody said his swelling in his left wrist has gone down
a lot, but the earliest he’ll take BP would be Wednesday, but it’s doubtful we’ll
see him out there before the Philly series.
