Rookie Hazing

The Fish decided that today in Philly would be rookie-hazing
day, and boy did they go to town. When we walked into the clubhouse post game,
there were Halloween-like outfits in bags hanging in selective lockers.
A few began to try on their costumes for the evening while
we were still in there. Dan Uggla warned them “either they wear what was given
to them or they leave this clubhouse naked.” Dan Myer was inquiring if he could
swap outfits with someone because he’s a veteran rookie and has had this done to
him four times.
We could not stop laughing at what they chose for Sean West
– I heard Cody Ross was behind the outfit. He looked like a dominatrix with all
black leather to wear, including a skimpy vest, a cabbie hat, and pants with a
hole in the butt – under which he wore some frilly underwear. Don’t forget the
chain links around his neck – and just try to picture this on a 6-foot-8
baby-faced guy.
Gaby Sanchez also began to get dressed, slipping on a white
poofy tutu, along with a coconut bra and a black velvet cowboy hat. One of the
guys shouted at him, “so is this why you were working out so hard yesterday?”
Chris Coghlan was given a skimpy jean vest, and had to go
shirtless underneath, along with cutoff short-short jean shorts (like the ones
never-nudes wore in Arrested Development). He also had a teal girls cowboy hat
to sport.
Rick VandenHurk’s outfit reminded me of my freshman year in
college, where all the girls from the northeast or other cold-weather climates
arrived in Miami and wanted to be a genie for Halloween. He had a skimpy black
bathing suit top, lined with gold sequins. It looked like solid black bathing
suit bottom (for a female), attached to sheer black parachute pants. Oh, and he
had a black veil to drape around his face.
All the “veteran” guys on the team who were behind the
costume selections were sitting back in their black leather chairs laughing and
having the rookies pose for pictures. Even Andre Dawson came by and snapped
some photos.
The other guys who had to dress up were Brian Sanches,
Cristhian Martinez, Brett Hayes, and Cameron Maybin. Supposedly Emilio
Bonifacio had to as well, but he was a bad sport and threw his costume in the
trash and walked out in his street clothes; the others were not thrilled with
him.
The plan is to parade the rookies in Philadelphia, it seems
they’re going out for dinner and might even make them sing on their own or
karaoke – as if they weren’t already embarrassed enough. Couldn’t get pictures
in the clubhouse obviously it’s not allowed, but I hope I was descriptive
enough so you chuckled a bit over a mental image.
