Rumors were floating this morning about the Marlins
organization contacting Bobby Valentine who’s considering returning as a
manager in Major League Baseball. The Marlins coaching staff doesn’t know their
situation for next year, and David Samson spoke to us about it today in the
press box in Philadelphia.
“The only reason the coaching staff doesn’t know yet is
because we haven’t had a chance to meet with them about issues and talk. We do
that every year. We go through every employee every year, whether they have a
six month or six year contract.”
The contracts are up at the end of this month.
Samson was specifically asked a few times about the future
of Fredi Gonzalez, who signed a two-year contract extension through 2011 season
in spring training. He never really did answer the question.
“With any job, everyone but the owner should be concerned
every year,” Samson said.
He then talked about the status of the team, and the
disappointment of the staff that they didn’t make the playoffs. He said they
evaluate the team before the season, during and after, and with all those
evaluations, they really feel they should be in the post season.
In conclusion, in reference to the Bobby Valentine rumor
that Samson did not want to address, he simply said, “I am not aware of any
contact in any way.”
