Playoffs?? By:Zach

I know, I know, you don’t want to hear about the Fins and their playoffs…..but there is an outside shot….there are in the mix, so we have to at least think about it…..I cant believe I just said that……Joey is playing well, The O-Line is getting there and the Defense is playing out of this world. Ronnie will be ok, give him some time to get healthy. How about the Saban rumors to Alabama, I DON’T THINK SO…….first off: Why leave a job you won’t get fired from? Second, Alabama? …I would rather coach the Canes…..

And as far as the Canes go….You got what you asked for fans…Coker is gone…..He was the reason the team was so bad right?….WRONG, recruiting slacked the last few years (Coker’s fault) and the rest of the coaches are bad (besides Shannon and Cristobal). SO, Yes Coker is at fault for a lot, but for everything? NO CHANCE, Why did Art Kehoe get fired again?????

I am not getting nervous yet about the Heat…but I stress YET. Shaq is taking a little break, Wade is playing at a Jordan Type Level and the cast (UD, ZO, and DWright) is playing ok, but not great. JWill please get healthy, the team isn’t the same without you…just get healthy…..Riley keep ripping the team, it will end up being better for this team. Shaq do us all a favor also, keep in shape during the mini vacation, we will need you later on.

And for the Gators, yes we are getting screwed, and yes we deserve a shot, but the world sometimes isn’t fair. I just hope the BCS people light themselves on fire and start all over. How can college football Division 1AA and 2 have playoffs and they work, but the main event Division 1 cant? Anyone else find that hard to understand?…Find a way and get it done, you think March Madness is fun, just wait till Winter Madness, just imagine UF vs. LSU (winner plays Ohio State) and Louisville vs. Michigan (winner plays USC)…I am antsy thinking about it. And for you corporate guys…there is money there to be made don’t worry….

I am tired, sorry but that’s all I got………so from the control room: from Lauren the Intern, Greg the OrangeMan, Sluggo and the Big Dog…I am the lapdog Zach and we are out…….You Stay Classy Kazakhstan

Da Canes Blog… By Hoch

There is only ONE man fit to be the next head coach of the University of Miami football team. There is only one man, a superhero really, that can take control of this team and return it to national prominence. There is only one man with the skills, intensity, and knowledge that can make the Canes contenders for the BCS Championship in just one season. That man’s name is Mike Ditka.

Sure. It’s a little startling to see it in print associated with The Miami Hurricanes. But it’s right there. Ditka is crazy enough to do it. He would just need a little cajoling… and it would be done. You want a fiery coach? Ditka’s the man. You want a coach that will stick with the program for a long time? Ditka’s the man. (Because he’ll never get a job offer anywhere else.) You want a head coach that can sit in a potential recruit’s home and talk them into coming to UM? Ditka’s the man. You want a coach prone to ridiculous decisions that will keep the program in the national spotlight? Ditka’s the man.

You can just feel the intensity in the Orange Bowl if Ditka were prowling the sidelines. Can you picture it? He’s got that glare working. He stares down at his offensive coordinator Willie Gault, and asks him what play they’re running. Then he turns his attention to his defensive coordinator Richard Dent, and asks him why they’re not running the 46 defense. Then he asks his running backs coach William Perry why there is only one running play in the playbook. (A run up the middle.)

The Orange Bowl is packed with fans as Coach Ditka leads the mighty Hurricanes to victory after victory. Old Hurricanes, along with Ditka’s old crew, line the sidelines of every game. There’s Ricky Williams. And Buddy Ryan. And Jim McMahon. Everyone comes out to see a game coached by “da coach.” No discipline problems on a Mike Ditka coached team.

This university needs to think outside the box. Do you really think Greg Schiano is going to bring the program back to national relevance? Do you really think Barry Alvarez is going to out-recruit Steve Spurrier or Bobbby Bowden? Do you think Randy Shannon is going to inspire of chain of steakhouses? There is only one man that can do it. And his name is Mike Ditka.

790 The Curse Blog… By Hoch

We did it again. We cursed someone. Undefeated Greg Schiano, head coach of Rutgers, came on the Dan LeBatard Show last week and then promptly lost his first game on Saturday. We curse people all the time. People get cursed by appearing on our station all the time. In fact, we wanted to do a weekly show with Zach Thomas this year, but he declined saying he didn’t want to be cursed.

Al Leiter signed on to do a weekly show on 790 The Ticket. He then had his worst season ever. Mike Lowell signed on to do a weekly show on 790 The Ticket. He then had his worst season ever. Joe Girardi signed on to do a weekly show on 790 The Ticket. He then was named manager of the year, and then fired.

It’s not just a few, random people that get cursed. It’s almost everyone that appears. By my estimation there are only two players that have been able to overcome the curse just by how good they are. Jason Taylor came on our show TWICE last week… and then had another dominating game on Sunday. And Dwyane Wade did a weekly show with us last year, and had an incredible season. We cannot curse D Wade or JT… but everyone else is fair game.

Terrell Owens did a weekly show with us last year, and then he got kicked off his team. Mark Cuban appeared on our show, and Dallas got beat bad by the Heat. Stan Van Gundy used to appear with us every third week. Now he appears nowhere.

790 The Ticket changes lives. If you have a loved one who has been contacted by 790 The Ticket to appear on a show, don’t let them. They’ll regret it. If there IS someone you would like cursed by 790, please let us know here on the responses, and we’ll do our best to book them on a show.

Wasn’t Pokey Reese supposed to be on with us during spring training?

The Broadcasters Blog… By Hoch

I sat down to watch the Bears-Giants game Sunday night and knew I would enjoy the broadcast because I genuinely like to listen to Al Michaels and John Madden. Plenty of people think John Madden is a clown now, and that he no longer knows what he’s talking about. I disagree. I enjoy his commentary, and enjoy the moments where he seems to get sidetracked and loses his train of thought. The commentators can make or break the game for me; and I’ll take Al Michaels and John Madden anytime. They entertain me.

Growing up in Chicago, I remember Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall announcing the White Sox games. (I wasn’t a Cubs fan.) That was a great broadcasting duo. Harry Caray was drunk half the time, and Jimmy Piersall was truly crazy. It made for great broadcasts. I guess that’s where I developed an appreciation for “homers.” I love the announcers who root for the home team. I don’t need impartial broadcasters. I need a cheering section.

That’s probably why I love the current White Sox announcers. Ken Harrelson and Darrin Jackson are two major homers. They call the White Sox the “good guys” and the opposing team the “bad guys.” It makes it more fun to watch. I like personality… I like passion… I don’t like a boring announcer that goes out of his way to stay impartial and act like a robot.

Growing up I used to love the pairing of Pat Summerall and John Madden. Summerall has that great announcers voice. Now, if I see that Summerall is broadcasting a game I’m watching, I get angry. You know he just doesn’t know much about the league anymore and he’s going to get names wrong all day long. (He announced a Bears game several weeks ago, and I thought he was terrible.) Sometimes announcers should bow out gracefully, because they just don’t have anything to say anymore. I mean you- Paul McGuire. Good God he stinks.

I still like Chris Berman, although a lot of people are tired of him. I don’t like Mike Tirico. He’s too antiseptic for me. Joe Thiesman annoys me because it always feels like he’s talking down to me. The same is true for Brent Musburger. I can’t stand Musburger. I wish Musburger would just disappear. Apparently Dr. Jack Ramsey is a legend and I’m supposed to like him; but I don’t. He bores me. I haven’t listened to Roxy Bernstein so I can’t comment. He does have a ridiculous name though.

One announcer that can really turn the excitement up in any event is Mean Gene Okerlund. That guy can flat out broadcast! Bill Walton ruins the game for me. I can’t stand to listen to him. Joe Buck is dreamy. I didn’t mind Hubie Brown during last year’s NBA Finals as much as everyone else did. I actually felt like I learned stuff from him. The single greatest voice for an NBA game is Marv Albert. Marv Albert has no equal.

The Dennis Miller experiment on Monday Night Football was a bad idea. I didn’t like it from the start. I’m withholding judgment on Tony Kornheiser. Right now I’m not crazy about him in the booth, but that might change. The single greatest Monday Night Football announcing disaster was Eric Dickerson on the sidelines. How the hell did he pass the audition?

I could go on and on about sports broadcasters, but I’ll just open up the forum to you. As for this particular blog, as the immortal Hawk Harrelson would say… “Put it on the board. Yessss!”

A Sad Bears Fan Blog… By Hoch

I am one sad Bears fan right now. It’s just not possible. It’s not possible that the Bears suffered their first defeat this year at the hands of the dreaded Dolphins. I had been waiting for this game since 1985. Ever since the Dolphins ruined the Bears undefeated season in 1985, I (and all other Bears fans) have been waiting for one more chance. This year was that chance. And the Bears stunk it up.

So now I have to sit here and take crap from everyone. Crap from all the Dolfans in my neighborhood. Crap from all the Dolfans at the radio station. Crap from all the callers that are Dolfans. But I’ll take it like a man. I’ll take what’s coming to me. No excuses. I talked all season long as if this game was a forgone conclusion. I never in my wildest dreams expected the Dolphins to win. I walked around with a little swagger all week. And now I’m going to get put in my place. And deservedly so.

I am now actively rooting for the Bears to lose another game. Please let the Giants beat them. Or the Patriots. Or the Jets. Anyone. I can’t stand the thought of the Bears going the entire season with only one loss to the Dolphins again. I wouldn’t be able to live with that.

This one might hurt a little more than 1985 too. At least the 1985 Dolphins were good. Dan Marino beat the Bears. This time it was Joey Harrington, Ronnie Brown, and Jason Allen. (Oh yeah. There was that Jason Taylor guy, too. He’s pretty good.)

So, it happened again. The Bears have a perfect season working and the Dolphins ruin the party. Big props to the Dolphins. They deserve it. Go Giants!
