“Rambo Screening…” By Hoch

Well, another Dan LeBatard Show movie screening has come and gone, and once again the movie stunk. The event itself was fun… the movie was violent and gory and disturbing. I don’t enjoy watching the rape and torture of women; and I don’t enjoy watching man’s inhumanity to other man. Take those very serious and disturbing topics and then throw Rambo into the mix, and you have the recipe for a terrible movie.

Don’t get me wrong… I was never bored during the movie. There was unbelievable action. Unbelievable violence. It was actually shot pretty well… but it just wasn’t for me. Too violent. Too disturbing. And I understand what you’re going to tell me… It’s Rambo not an Academy Award winning film. I know that. I get that. I just think you defile a very serious subject like genocide when you throw Rambo into it. I know I’m in the minority in this, and I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinion.

Don’t get me wrong… I cheered when the mean soldier’s head was literally blown off. I howled when Rambo ripped a bad guy’s throat out. (You read that correctly. He ripped someone’s throat out.) I loved it when Rambo killed off an entire army and the only harm that came to him was a sore shoulder. All of that was great. And pathetic. Just not my thing. But then again, I’ve never been much of a “man’s man.” (You’ll recall that I recently blogged about my love for American Idol.)

The movie screening itself, though, was a lot of fun. It’s always great to meet the listeners and be able to talk to everyone and hear what they think about the show. It was very cool for World Series MVP Mike Lowell to show up at the theater and hang out with all the listeners. It was a great time… hopefully we’ll do another one soon. (There was a coming attraction for a movie called “Midnight Meat Locker.” If that doesn’t necessitate a Dan LeBatard Show movie screening, then nothing doesn’t.)

As Rambo says, you either “die for something, or live for nothing.” I blog for nothing.

“My Addiction…” By Hoch

There’s probably some irony in the fact that I’m addicted to a new reality show on VH1 called “Celebrity Rehab.” The fact that these “celebs” would allow cameras to intrude on something so personal is reason enough to watch… but it’s actually compelling/train wreck TV that I just can’t stop watching. I need more episodes!

We can all agree that it’s pretty creepy to crave the spotlight so much that you’d actually agree to do a show called “Celebrity Rehab.” It shows you just how intoxicating being a celebrity is… the fact that these people would actually agree to do this show. But so what? It’s good TV, so I’m in. It’s hosted by Dr. Drew, who many people probably know from “Lovelines” and the other MTV stuff he’s done.

The celebs in rehab include Daniel Baldwin, Jessica Sierra (American Idol), Chyna (WWE wrestler), Brigette Neilsen (Stallone’s former wife), the lead singer from the band Crazy Town, a girl from the TV show Family Matters, Mary Carey (porn star), and Jeff Conaway from the old TV show Taxi. Conaway is clearly the most fucked up out of the entire crew. It’s pretty sad to watch him.

I know I watch a lot of crappy TV shows. I’m not saying that this one isn’t crap. But it’s worth a watch. From the voyeur aspect alone it’s interesting. I’m always amazed that people will open up their lives to cameras in ways that will eventually embarrass them. I can’t figure out why any celebrity would do “Celebrity Fit Club” or “Celebrity Apprentice” or “The Surreal Life,” but obviously that need to be in front of the camera is an enormous need for these people. But this show is beyond belief. I’m sure the stars and producers rationalize the show by saying “they’re trying to help people…” Right. Seeing the lead singer of Crazy Town go through detox really hits home for me. Now I’ll never use cocaine.

But, who am I to be so cynical when there’s such great TV to watch. I can only imagine what’s next… “Celebrity Bowel Movement… See celebrities taking a crap!” Or “Celebrity DUI… Drive along with a celebrity after he’s had too much to drink and see what hijinks ensue!”

“AI Is Back…” By Hoch

AI is back… And I’m not talking about Allen Iverson. American Idol is back fellas! Call me what you want, but I’m pretty damn excited about the yearly return of American Idol. If you watch the show, you know what I’m talking about. If you don’t watch the show, you probably think it’s just a lame talent show… It’s not. It’s captivating TV. It’s the kind of show you can really invest yourself in. (I can’t believe I’m writing this.)

American Idol is one of those shows that once you get into, you just can’t get out of. The passion… The drama… The comedy… It’s an entertainment overload! (What’s wrong with me?)

Randy Jackson! Simon! Paula! Ryan Seacrest! It’s like having all my old buddies back in town! (Oh my God, I think I need help.)

Who will be this year’s Constantine? Who will be this year’s hot chick? Who will be this year’s slutty one? Who will be this year’s fat one? Who will be this year’s nerd that slowly transforms into a stud? Who will be this year’s early favorite that gets bounced out too early? Who will be this year’s Sanjaya? (Someone please help me.)

I will spend hours upon hours watching this show. It’s on 2 or 3 times a week, and I won’t miss a minute of it. I’ll miss Heat games. I’ll miss NFL playoff games. I’ll miss SportsCenter. But I will not miss American Idol! (I hate me.)

Seacrest out.

“Rambo Time…” By Hoch

It’s time for another world famous Dan LeBatard Show movie screening. We’ve held two movie screenings in the past already… One for “Rocky Balboa” and the other for “Live Free or Die Hard.” I thought both movies were TERRIBLE, which is the exact reason we try and fill a theater full of listeners to watch it.

This movie screening will be for the latest Rambo movie, titled fittingly enough, “Rambo.” The movie opens on Friday, January 25. Our plan, as with our previous movie screenings, is to do our regular show that Friday and then head over to The Muvico in Pembroke Pines/Davie and watch the movie starting around 8 or 8:30pm.

We buy all the tickets in the theater, so your only job is to get on the guest list. The only way to get on the guest list is to listen to the Dan LeBatard Show or to e-mail us at cantstanddan@790theticket.com. E-mail your name, e-mail address, and how many tickets you need for the screening. If you’re chosen, you’ll get an e-mail back from me telling you how many seats you have and how you’ll be able to get in that night.

There’s a BIG PRIZE during this screening too! One grand prize winner at the movie screening will win an autographed Gene Keady photo that our program director bought off Ebay. That’s how we spice up an event, baby!

Our last movie screening saw some celebs in the audience too… Kimbo Slice was there… Terrell Owens was there… Uncle Luke was there… Reagan Mauia and Samson Satele from the Dolphins were there… Hopefully we’ll have some celebs at this one too!

So get your e-mail requests in to cantstanddan@790theticket.com if you’d like to join us Friday night, January 25th at Muvico to see Rambo!
