Fast Food… By Hoch
April 28th, 2008
We were discussing fast food on the air the other day because Arby’s just announced that they’re buying out Wendy’s. Fast food is always one of those topics that you can’t get anyone to agree on. My wife is a HUGE Burger King fan, and I think Burger King stinks. I haven’t liked Burger King since I was a kid, and I don’t like it now. But my wife grew up loving Burger King, so I guess she still has good memories of the place.
To me, there’s no better fast food than Wendy’s. The Wendy’s cheeseburgers are unparalleled in fast food as far as I’m concerned. (Steak and Shake has awesome burgers too… but I don’t know if Steak and Shake is considered fast food, since you actually get waited on.) Fat Burger and In and Out Burger are another couple places with good burgers… but they don’t have them here so you can really only get them if you’re traveling.
As far as McDonald’s… I’m cool with it. Great fries. Tasty burgers. I’ve never been to Checkers, so I can’t comment on them. I haven’t been to Arby’s in years, but I’m really not a roast beef fan, so I’m not sure how much success I’d have in an Arby’s. (Although I do remember them having potato cakes. Do they still have those?)
One of my secret pleasures that I’m always embarrassed to admit is that I love Taco Bell. I don’t lie to my wife about anything… except Taco Bell. She thinks it’s so gross that I never tell her when I eat there. She’ll ask what I had for lunch, and I’ll just tell her Subway or Quiznos or something like that. But the truth is I LOVE Taco Bell. Don’t know why. But man, those burritos and tacos are amazing! Grilled Stuft Burrito! Oh yeah!
Some fast food things come and go… I always wonder what happened to some of the less successful rollouts from the fast food places. Remember the Arch Deluxe? The McDLT? The Shamrock Shake? Do any of those still exist anywhere?
I’m not a big fast food chicken guy… Not crazy about KFC or Popeye’s. When I was growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, there was a fast food chicken place called Brown’s Chicken… That was always pretty good. You don’t see those around anymore I don’t think.
Anyone remember the McDonald’s beefsteak sandwich? Also, Quizno’s has jumped the shark.

There are few things more delicious than a Chipotle burrito. Locally, LaSpada’s Original Hoagies are the cat’s meow when it comes to subs.
4. sandeel | April 28th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
I grew up eating Burger King, but now I prefer McDonalds and Wendy’s. McDonalds fries are the best, and Wendy’s double cheeseburger rocks.
Can’t do Taco Bell or KFC much.
5. sandeel | April 28th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Hoch, you didn’t mention whether you ever eat fast food for breakfast. McDonalds clearly leads that pack.

What do Taco Bell and this blog have in common? They are both sh*t. Not “the” sh*t. Just sh*t.
7. King of Loserville | April 28th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
sorry guys…when I was in college…fast food was a luxury,,,
I got a bag of ramen noodles…I can feed all the Hochamaniacs with that!!!
Worse Food you ate in College….???
Let’s go maniacs…Dan managed to destroy another Monday Night Raw Sewage Segment…let’s make one of our own!!

What a horrible fake me. I would never besmirch Taco Bell or Hoch’s blog. How dare you, sir?
Although I will admit that fast food may have contributed to a slight weight gain by me….

What a great blog, I have been lusting for some of my favorites for the last couple of weeks. Hoch you hit a homerun with this blog.
The Jack in the Box Taco. 2 for $.99. Is it really a taco? Not sure but it is awesome. I get 4 of these with a sack of Onion Rings. Oh my such heaven exspecially if you are on the way home after a night of pints. You NY’ers probably don’t know about Jack but trust, me good eats. We should have one in FLA by 2010.
White Castle. HELLO HOCH and the rest of you NY’ers. Yeah we have Krystal but there is no comparison to the original slider. I went to Krystals last week and boy was it bad. The meat tasted old and there was not the onion flavor that I CRAVE. God bless the slider.
Finally we have Lion’s Choice. It’s a roast beef joint that started in St.Louis. Forget Arbys this place is the real deal. They slow cood the roast and then slice it, right in front of you. Put on some season salt and then serve a piece of heaven to you. Get a side of fries and a lemonade and you have nirvana. There are 2 Lion’s Choice (or as my friend calls them, Roar’s) in Ft. Myers. I recommend to my fellow Hochamanics, when in Ft. Myers check this place out. You will never go to a Arbys ever again.
Still looking for the Jai Alai date.

Ozzie, my friend says the same thing about LaSpada’s and I have seen there sandwich. Awesome but I have never had one. Also check out http://www.primantibrothers.com/

I have been a fan of Mcdonald;s myself…it was the safe bet, and in NY they are all over the place…
Does everyone remember the McNuggets before they bacame “white meat” nuggets? I remember it like it was yesterday…white meat, dark meat, and then you always end up with one of those nuggets that your bit into but can’t break off a piece, at which point your rush to the drink till it goes down method of eating…
Can’t knock it lived off that stuff for a long time. Would any of you NY Hochamaniacs consider Gray’s Papaya fast food? for $5.00 back in the day you could eat like a King…4 Hot Dogs…and one of those fake slurpee’s that they had…I was always a fan of the Pina Colada drink…
I like Burger King, more than Wendy’s…Checkers is ok…Arby’s is nice when I am in the mood for something new bu the same…I went to a Steak ‘N’ Shake in Miami by the Walmart in Kendall…gotta give it two thumbs down…the one in Pompano is much better.
never been to Jack in the Box Hass…but I have heard good things from my boys in LA…
12. Ozzie | April 29th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Do yourself a favor and eat LaSapada’s for lunch today Hass. It’ll change your life.
Big fan of Primanti Bros. too. I LOVE their Pittsburger! Their Pizza is actually pretty good too.
Also, if you’re into to quick and really good Asian food, Pei Wei is tough to beat.
13. Hoch | April 29th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Just wanted to chime in that I do indeed remember the McNuggets before they were all white meat. It was like a combination of white meat, dark meat, and beak.
14. sandeel | April 29th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Wow, a comment from Hoch in the middle of a non-Q&A blog. You the man, Hoch!!!
15. Hoch | April 29th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
It’s a topic I really care about.
BY THE WAY… Jai-Alai night will be Wednesday, May 21 at Dania Jai-Alai!
16. Hassenpfeffer | April 29th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Wednesday?? I though it was on a Friday
Not sure if I can bring friends but I will make it. What time?
17. rodthman | April 29th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
you LIKE steak and shake burgers? the one out here, I can barely see the beef on it! In & Out rules, but Hoch’s right, I can onlyu get it when I travel.
Jack in the Crack’s Ultimate Cheesburger is pretty awesome too.
18. sandeel | April 29th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
What about pizza, Hoch? I found a really good New York-style pizza place near my house and I go there a lot when I need a break from McDonalds and Wendy’s.
As far as the pizza chains, I prefer the thin crust from Dominos and the cheese-stuffed crust from Pizza Hut. I don’t like Little Caesars or Papa John’s.
19. King of Loserville | April 29th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Little Ceasars isa rip off is pretty nasty…you go in ask for a pizza and they give you one off the shelf…WTF!!!
sandeel…where’s the pizza shop? I will take pizza over fast food any day.
Beak? now that’s funny…
Steak’n’shake is not all that either…I like the burgers at Flannigans…the ribs too…
20. Hassenpfeffer | April 29th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
No if you want ribs Tom Jenkins on US1 in Downtown FTL. Now those are good ribs. Not fast food but good stuff.
21. E! | April 29th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
there’s a fat burger on south beach!!
22. Hassenpfeffer | April 30th, 2008 at 12:24 am
Steve’s pizza in N. Miami on US1 Rocks.
Getting back to fast food.
McDonalds double cheese burger for a buck is probably the best bargin in fast food.
In STL Steak-N-Shakes are all open 24/7 a greasy double cheeseburger is great at 3am to soak up the Bud. Yeah it was always a difficult choice on the ride home from the bars. Steak-N-Shake, White Castle or Jack in the Box. All open 24/7.
Yeah Ozzie, I will get to LaSapada’s one day.
For Cheese Steaks go to Spanky’s. http://southflorida.metromix.com/restaurants/steaks/spankys-cheesesteak-factory-margate/reader-review/129003/view
There are 2 or 3 in the area. More good stuff.
Also Try a Frita (Cuban Hamburger)@ El Rey del las Frita. http://3guysfrommiami.com/rey_fritas.html
Now that’s god fast food you can only get in Miami. I always go the the on in Hialeah. But I do have to warn you they don’t always speak English. Thats okay just say una frita y batido de mamey (mamey shake). If you want two fritas replace una with dos. The also have great Cuban Coffee (cafe Cubano).
23. Hassenpfeffer | April 30th, 2008 at 12:35 am
Oh I forgot to memtion the Steak-N-Shake in Hallandale across from Gulfstream is good. I was not impressed with the one at Sawgrass the two times I was there but that was about 3 years ago.
24. Ozzie | April 30th, 2008 at 3:28 am
Up in Broward, Pizza Time in Plantation is really good. I also like Ferro’s Pizza in the Coral Springs/Margate/Tamarac area. Down in Miami Pizza Rusitca in South Beach/Downtown is phenomenal. They don’t have these here anymore, but there used to be an Uno’s Pizza (Chicago Style) in Town & Country in Kendall…awesome, awesome pizza. The only one I know of now is in Orlando near Disney.
Hole in the wall pizza places are so much better than the big chains like Pizza Hut, Poppa Johns, Dominoes, etc. It’s not even close.
25. Rick - Boston | April 30th, 2008 at 5:08 am
In & Out Burger thats it !
LOCK THE THREAD
26. Hassenpfeffer | April 30th, 2008 at 7:34 am
Rick,
My twin swears by In & Out Burger. I never had one but in Broward I think these might compare. Char-Hut and Jack’s on N. US1 in Ft. Lauderdale.
Also Le Tub on A1A in Hollywood is a bit overrated by Oprah and GQ. Good burger but a bit overrated. I think Char-Hut and Jacks have better. Le Tub does offer a great sunset view and a swinging chair that has always led me into a womens bedroom.
27. hoops | April 30th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
White Castle is the real deal and Jackson Hole in NYC along with Roy Rogers and we can all eat ribs unlike Zaslow

Never been to El Rey de las Fritas…heard of it…cc Kenny Rogers (the baseball player or the singer?) What about Fudruckers? good burgers…
White Castle is ok…but in moderation…you start getting in double digit sliders and you you could spontaneously combust…
I used to eat Nathans Hot Dogs at Coney Island…there is just something about eating hot dogs…and then getting a splinter in your ass from the wooden roller coaster of death (Cyclone) that is only scary if your 3 years old or high as a kite!!!
34. odessa steps magazine | May 1st, 2008 at 4:21 am
How about some love for Chick-Fil_A? great, depsite the creepy religiousity of the place.
Also, Thumbs up to Dairy Queen.
UP here in MD, also Roy Rogers, which has great burgers, but franchises are disappearing faster than Hoch’s hair with Rogaine. (I kid because I care.)

36. Ozzie | May 1st, 2008 at 1:22 pm
I can vouch on the Frita’s. I haven’t tried El Rey’s yet, but as a kid I used to scarf them from La Carreta or Latin America. For those of you who are wondering WTF a Frita is, it is somewhat of a spicy, crunchy, burger with shoe-string potatoes. I say somewhat because to be honest, to this day I still have no idea what the exact ingredients are–it could be cat meat for all I know. But believe me, they’re delicious.
There’s this little place off of Miller and 92 Ave called “El Segundo Palacio de los Jugos” which is basically translated to “The Second Palace of the Juices.”–the place looks like it could be shut down by the FDA any second, but I’ll be damned if they have the best food there. If you like good Hispanic food at low cost, that’s your spot. For instance, a loaded shredded pork sandwich costs like 3 bucks. For another 2 bucks you can wash it down with one of their homemade mamey shakes. But, like Hass said, if you don’t know Spanish it can be a little intimidating.

King give us a blog of fast food that compares with the Zas. Just say No to Zas Hochamaniacs
38. Hassenpfeffer | May 1st, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Frita — a small, griddled burger flavored with paprika and onions. The ground beef can also be mixed with some ground chorizo for a more intense flavor. The beef to chorizo ratio was 2:1. And of course the shoe-string potatoes and usually a spicy sauce.
Burgers, not really fast food but Frisch’s/Shoney’s Big Boy and they also have great but greasy onion rings.
39. sandeel | May 1st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Ozzie,
If you’ve been to Miller and 92, then you must have been to Arbetter’s for hot dogs on 87th and Bird? I eat there at least once a week.
40. Hassenpfeffer | May 1st, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Asslow = the Original Chicken McNuggets (processed beak)…Nuff Said!!!
Anyone been to El Rinconcito in Hialeah??? Food was good…however the last time we went…let’s just say someone forgot to throw out the spoiled steak!!!
Haven’t been back since, but I might risk it…they have some great latin food.
Anyone else hear that Arby’s bought Wendy’s?
Also…on a different note…this is good info for everyone…
Sharper Image, Linens ‘n’ Things and Levitts Furniture all filed for bankruptcy early last week…reports just came out…there are some other ones out there that I still can’t fully confirm…if you have wives or girlfriends that are shopaholics send then to these stores…SALES are coming!!!

We want the late hours with Hoch for Zas’s time slot. Or put Friedman to do post Marlins. I have never heard a guy like Zaslow who is such a non athlete talking a bunch of BS and thinking he is right
51. Hassenpfeffer | May 7th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I am looking forward to the snack bar at jai alai. Also I was there on a Friday about two months ago and got some really good mini pizzas for a buck in the upstairs bar by the poker tables.
The Dania jai alai website does state $.99 food and drink night. Hoch said dollar beer and hot dogs. Does anyone know if that includes anything else?
52. 560 Joe Rose | May 7th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
MMMM Char Hut. I love their big juicy hot dogs I cant get enough of sticking those things in my mouth. Just put some mustard and ketchup on them and you will feel like you are in Heaven.

Hoch, if your wife reads your blog she now knows your dirty little Taco Bell secret (but she’s probably too busy to read her husband’s crazy blog). In-N-Out Burger is the best chain on the west coast but they’re not everywhere like McDonald’s. In LA, the best place is Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles. I know it sounds weird and it isn’t exactly “fast food” (they have waiters) but the food is great. There are several locations and they’re always packed.
57. 560 Joe Rose | May 15th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Hassenpfeffer you say check out Jacks on Federal HWY are you referring to my former co-host Jason Jackson? I reassure you I will never eat his meat or stick anything of his in my mouth.
