Jai Alai Is Back… By Hoch

May 22nd, 2008

Is it too early to emphatically state that the great sport of jai-alai is back? Wednesday night we asked our listeners to show up to Dania Jai-Alai and see if we can make the sport popular again for at least one night… It was, to quote Jim Rome, phenomenal. Over 500 listeners showed up and brought life back into the jai-alai fronton that hadn’t seen life in probably 15 years.

What a tremendous event! I loved hanging out and meeting the listeners… I even got to meet Hassenpfeffer, one of the original “Hochamaniacs” and a frequent poster on this blog… What a highlight! In the coming days we’ll post tons of pictures from the event on the website so you can see it. I also videotaped everything, so I’ll edit something together and post the video too.

The jai-alai action was great… Legendary player Joey was there, and it was honestly a thrill to meet him. Dan, Stugotz, myself, Sedano, and Sid each got a chance to lace up the cesta and throw the pelota… That was great too, although my hand still smells from wearing that sweaty cesta. So many people from the radio station showed up to support the event… The great Mike Ryan, our producer, Sid Rosenberg, Sedano, Andy King, Jaron (our board-op), Cyn City, Vickie, Steve White, Amanda… I would say that the jai-alai bathrooms are already so disgusting, that our program director Steve White couldn’t even foul them up. (I digress.)

Then there were the dollar beers and dollar hot dogs, which I will now officially begin to call dollar “hoch” dogs. The lines were too long- Dania Jai-Alai had planned for an extra hundred people to show up, not 500 more, so hopefully they’ll have that corrected for next time. All I can say is… Resounding success! And now it’s time to move on to our next event…

Saturday, May 31 at Boomers in Dania… It’s a Kimbo Slice “Watch Party.” Kimbo fights live on CBS that Saturday night, so we’re going to gather everyone at Boomers and watch the fight together. I know you probably think Boomers is a place for 12 year old kids, but they just put in a sports bar for adults, with alcohol, big screen TVs, pool tables, and more, so it should be a fun night.

Here’s the thing for the Boomers party… We need to limit it to around 200 people, so you’ll need to be on our guest list. There’s also a $20 entrance fee, but that gets you unlimited rides, bowling, go karts, etc. If you want to get on the guest list, e-mail me how many people to cantstanddan@790theticket.com.

    First!

I don’t think I’ve ever yelled that much at a sporting event…It was tons of fun. GO TOTO!!!

  • 3. TC  |  May 22nd, 2008 at 1:08 pm

The above comment was intended as a subtle commentary on how this blog has developed a life of its own and superceded the Levitz show. Hence, the “First” comment like so many other uber popular blogs out there.

    I am not that vain.

Let’s Keep Jai-Alai Alive!! What a great sport and great fun. I had a blast last night!!!!

  • 5. Big John Stud  |  May 22nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

God I wish I was still in Miami. I’m going down tomorrow, but I sent some friends of mine last night, so I look forward to the report on whether Jai Alai is a new hang-out.

Great event! And my guys showed eveyone just how well speedos fit into the sport. And thanks to those Dania Beach hot dogs and cheap beer… my bathroom resembles the ones at the Jai Alai. Good times!

Bring Jai Alai to Miami not dania thats a far drive.

  • 8. David Cook  |  May 22nd, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Why in the world did you have this event the SAME night that I won American Idol? If you had it another night, then there would have been at least 1000 people there at Jai Alai.

Shame to all of you at 790- The Ticket.

Could not be there but sounded great. I was hoping Hass , King and cc had a boxing match with Zas

  • 10. ozzie  |  May 22nd, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Had a nice time traveling back to 1976. Thanks.

  • 11. Hassenpfeffer  |  May 22nd, 2008 at 11:18 pm

Hoops, I didn’t see any of the other Hochamaniacs. It was great talking with Hoch, he said our posts crack him up.

Hoch, my friends all had a great time. Do you noticed one was a woman. Do I get extra HochaBounes Points?

Watching the games with a crowd made them even more enjoyable. I was there in March on a Wednesday and there were about 2 dozen people in the stands. Those people about 4 or 5 rows behind us were great, even the girls were talking trash. Yeah dollar beers will get any crowd stirred up. What a great time. Thanks Hoch.

Hass, that is great to hear I hope to be at the next event if permits. I was not sure if you had mentioned bringing a White Castle down to Florida that would be a great idea. Any progress ?

  • 13. sandeel  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 12:38 am

I was there, but had to leave about 9:30. I mingled some, but didn’t feel like asking every person I met whether they were a Hochamaniac.

  • 14. Hassenpfeffer  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 1:18 am

Sandeel, you should have gone down to the front row and interduced yourself to Hoch. I ran into him on the way in, gave him my real name and he knew exactly who I was. My friend Jesse seemed inmpressed. Jesse’s a big fan of the show but he’s not a Hochamanic. He’s a texting E-tard but I let him hang around anyway, he’s a good kid.

When I was in line for beers (we were doubling up because of the long lines) I heard some guys trashing Zas. I don’t know any listeners of the station that like Zas. Anyway I didn’t ask if they were Hochamanics for the same reason you stated.

So Sandeel did ya have an awesome time? Post your experance.

Hoops. White Castle has already been contacted and they have no interest in opening a store in S. FL. They don’t franchise. Good news is Jack in the Box should be here by 2010.

I got more to post but I don’t want to blow my wad in one post.

  • 15. odessa steps magazine  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 1:26 am

    sounds like a great time.

can’t wait to see pictures and video.

  • 16. hoops  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 1:52 am

Wow Jack in the box , very nice. Did somebody buy them out ? All of the sports fans I know can’t stand Zas.

  • 17. Hassenpfeffer  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 am

Jack in the Box is still based in San Diego. They have an aggressive franchising champaign and want to be nationwide by 2010. Which is why you see Jack in the Box comercials on some cable shows even though we don’t have them.

Also Lebo was there. So my question is did he show up of his own choice or was he forced? IF he showed up of his own choice the show can no longer say that he has never gone to a sporting event without being forced. Just trying to keep it honest.

  • 18. Big John Stud  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 6:46 am

    Hassen, that’s a good point.

Does anyone else think Dan has a slight resemblance to Mike Baiamonte in that first photo in the gallery? I think it’s the way he’s holding his hand up.

  • 19. Ryan Morgan  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 1:46 pm

I really wanted to be at Jai Alai, but the Wednesday evening commute from Philadelphia to Dania is a real bitch. I will join next time if Stugotz offers a 50/50 ticket for Texaco or American Airlines.

  • 20. cc  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 2:28 pm

Did the little man Zas show up ? I figured he would be part of the enntertainment as he can’t talk sports nor try to play

  • 21. TC  |  May 23rd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I’m real upset I missed it, especially since it sounded like chaos. Think Caddyshack Pool scene, Caddies welcome 2 - 2:15. Thats how I picture the night. I see Levitz as D’Annunzio, Stu Gotz as Danny Noonan, and Hoch as the one and only Lacey Underall. All the Hochamaniacs suck in their stomachs when Marc Hochman walks by. 52 inch pythons and all.

  • 22. cc  |  May 24th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

King, lets help 790 and take a poll on how people want Zas off the radio. They should do what’s best for the public

  • 23. Big John Stud  |  May 27th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

    Ryan:

You live up In Philly? I just moved up to the area in September, but couldn’t let go of Dan. You from South Florida originally?

  • 24. Tiger Jai Alai is a flamming queer!  |  August 15th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

The guy Ralph “Tiger” Butts is a pedophile. Stay clear if you have kids!
