Radio Personalities… By Hoch
July 14th, 2008
I’ve been wanting to do a blog about run-ins with radio personalities for a while, so here it is. I mentioned this on the air last week… That I thought it would be interesting to hear stories from people about their encounters with radio people. I’ve always been a big fan of radio, so meeting radio people I’ve listened to all my life has always been some sort of bizarre thrill for me. (I warn you now- if this blog just becomes a tired, worn out Zaslow bashing response, I’m ending this blog forever.)
I’ve had a few encounters with radio personalities over the years… None worse than Sonny Fox. Sonny Fox used to be a big deal in South Florida radio. When I ran into him it was while he was the morning host for Majic 102.7. I was a young UM student, just trying to find my way in radio. I had a job running the tape for “The Best of Sonny Fox” on Sunday mornings from 6am10am. (The mere fact that there was something called “The Best” of Sonny Fox should tell you something about how weak this radio market is.)
So every Sunday I’d come in and roll tape for “The Best of Sonny Fox” and I’d get paid $5.25 per hour. Obviously, I wasn’t doing it for the money. I was hoping to use the experience to gain a foothold in the medium. After months of running the show, I finally got a chance to meet Sonny Fox himself. He had to be at the studio early one Sunday morning to take the van to a radio remote. I figured this would be my big chance to meet him, let him tell me how much he appreciated me running his “best of” show, and perhaps have him offer me a gig on his morning show.
He blew me off. He walked in the studio, I began to introduce myself, and he waved his arm at me, (as if to say “I’ve heard enough out of you,”) and walked out. That was it. Fuck Sonny Fox. I lost my job several months later when- no joke- I asked for a dollar more per hour. I wanted to make $6.25 per hour… It would have cost the company an additional $4.00 per week, but they told me no. So I quit. Fuck Sonny Fox.
Another big deal for me was meeting Phil Hendrie, who to me is the single most talented radio person that has ever lived. If you’ve never heard Phil Hendrie’s show, find it online and listen. It might take a while to figure what’s going on, but when you do, you’ll realize just what a genius he is. I had listened to Hendrie for a while when he was on WIOD. (Neil Rogers and Phil Hendrie on the same station— now THAT was a great radio lineup.)
At that time in my life, I was also DJing parties with a little mobile DJ system I had. I got hired to DJ the WIOD Christmas party one year, and that’s when I got to meet Phil Hendrie. That dude was awesome. Really nice… Really friendly… Really appreciative of kind words… Fuck Sonny Fox.
That was the first time I ever asked a radio personality for an autograph. (I had a “best of Phil Hendrie” CD with me, and he autographed it for me.) The only other time I’ve ever asked a radio person for an autograph was when I met Gary Dell’Abate’s mother at an event and I asked her to give my card to her son and ask him to send me an autograph. (Dell’Abate is Howard Stern’s executive producer, better known as Baba Booey.) I was working at a top 40 radio station in West Palm Beach at the time and I was working our booth at an outdoor art festival. A nice lady came up to our booth, and after conversing for a while, she told me her son was Baba Booey. Since I love the Howard Stern Show, I gave her my card and asked her to give it to Gary and have him send me an autograph. I had forgotten all about it, but a couple weeks later and autographed photo of Baba Booey showed up in my mailbox.
So, let’s hear some radio run ins you’ve had. Was Hank Goldberg an asshole? Was Footy a swell guy? I must know. And fuck Sonny Fox.

Well this kinda falls under radio personalities being that she does radio from time to time. But I met Lesley Visser last year during media week at the Super Bowl. She was the nicest person you could ever meet and she even knew who I was! Which was the best part. That was back when I was still the producer for Sid’s show and I guess she listened from time to time to the show and knew who I was which I thought was awesome. Bad encounter was when I first met Marc Hochman what an asshole! Fuck Sonny Fox!

I’ve never encountered or run into anyone famous. But I did see Eddie George at the W hotel bar in Chicago. At least I think it was him.
Oh and get ready to end this blog forever, because here it comes….

What kind of sick person worships or look up to radio personalities? Radio are people too. Why even ever be star stuck in any shape or form for any radio personality? I met a lot people in radio and television and from all works of life, and I can truly say that no radio personality is more important than anyone else in that I met in my life — from dog catcher to president. They all the same and to put them on a throne of any kid is just ridiculous and anyone who wants that kind of praise for being lucky enough to have a mic to sit at everyday, should not be put on a pedestal, but just to be happy that you have your damn job. There are plently of pansies and prima donnas in the business as there is. Please there are no radio personlities worthly of worship just brcause you have a mic at you four hours a day.

I have not run into anyone.
I did go to a Neil Rogers remote a few years ago. Jorge, his sidekick, was there. He was cool.
I also approaced Sid during the May Jai Alai event. Told him how I hated him when he first started hear and now I listen frequently. He was cool, too.
Hoch, you should edit you blog entry to put the Zaslow disclaimer in bold.

Anyone else going to the poker event Wednesday? I’m nervous its gonna be an all-in fest. Think about it. If it starts at 8 and must end by 12 (thats what the lady told me when I signed up) then how are they going to widdle down from 200 to get a winner in 4 hours! My 9 person 1 table home games take 4 hours sometimes. Also, I hope they sprinkle the “celebs” throughout the tables and not just have a couple main tables where they play each other. Anyway, should be fun.
Hoch, can you post/blog some quick details. I know you said show up at 6 if you still need to sign up, but what about those who already have signed up?
8. Hassenpfeffer | July 14th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Well of course the guys from the show are cool. That’s why we listen. I have met most of the staff from 790 and they all were cool… Well Zas I don’t think likes me but he was a good sport about me rippen him. In other words he was not hostile.
Okay so other talent. Radio Rich Dalton for various STL station and some SoCal Station also was in Michelle MacDonald’s first band. Yes the guy from the Doubie Brothers. I had a few talks with him. First outside the Checkerdome aka the St. Louis Area. That is when I knew I shouldn’t get into radio. But that was the early 80s and well radio was WKRP. But who would know that the talk thing would come on. This was before Rush. I should have followed my gut…or not.
I met Jorge from the Neil Rogers show he was really cool that was about two months ago. He showed me pics on his phone of some chick with fake tis. I don’t like fake tits but it was really cool to meet him. I missed Neil a few weeks earlier.
I met Dan Dierdorf from MNF and the St. Louis Football Cardinals when I was like 10 he was nice. I also met him later in life before he was on MNF and he was still cool.
Also the Mad Hungarian Al Hrabosky after he retired from baseball. He didn’t have the stache but my first question was where is the stache? Al’s response was “too much grey”. Al does Cardinal Baseball now.
Ozzie Smith from TWIB and 13 time gold glove winner and Hall of Famer. Ozzie knows me and my twin (sorry Hoch there are two of us) I don’t think at this point in live I could call Ozzie and say what’s up but if he saw me he would laugh and say which one are you.
I do want to say that I killed Willie (ET) McGee in NBA jam and he was just a good person. Okay I am name dropping here after all Willie does have a ring a batting title. I also met most of the WW? Wrestlers in the late 80s and they were also cool except for Bobby the Brain. Infact out of all the sports guys I have met Bobby was the only ass. And an Ass he was. If you read my post you know the story. I am sure it will come up again.
Hoch I met Michael Singletarybut that doesn’t apply to this blog. I will tell ya about it at Poker. I will say good sport and nice person.
So how is that? I have met many more celebs but that it for radio folks and then some.

TC here are the poker details. I should be wearing a red www.saveab.com shirt even though it’s a mout point. But I have call AB servral times and connected with the STL folks. Heres the details.
Thanks for your interest in playing poker in “The Dan LeBatard Show” first annual poker tournament at Dania Jai-Alai’s poker room. The tournament will begin on Wednesday, July 16th at 8pm. There’s a $25 buy in, and based on 200 players that would give us a grand prize of about $2,000…. (Prizes can go up or down based on number of players.) THE WINNER WILL ALSO GET THE FIRST EVER “GOLDEN MUSTACHE TROPHY!”
The only way to guarantee your spot at a table is to head to Dania Jai-Alai sometime before July 16th and register for our poker tournament at the poker room there, which is located on the second floor. Just stop by any day after noon, and head over to the check in at the poker room, and tell them you’d like to register for The Dan LeBatard Show Poker Tournament on July 16th. That’s the only way to completely SECURE a seat at one of the tables.
If you can’t make it to Dania Jai-Alai to register in advance, then just plan on coming out to the Dania Jai-Alai poker room on Wednesday, July 16th. We’ll fill up the tables on a first come, first serve basis. (The tournament will begin promptly at 8pm, so plan on getting there early.) We will have a ton of prizes to give away that night… and that night is a Wednesday, so it’s dollar beers, dollar hot dogs, dollar ice cream, and more!
So far, tentatively scheduled to play in our poker tournament are Dan LeBatard, Stugotz, Jorge Sedano, Panthers Hockey Voice Randy Moller, Izzy Gutierrez of “Around The Horn” and The Miami Herald, Ethan Skolnick of The Sun-Sentinel, Sid Rosenberg, and many others. This is going to be a fun night of poker and just hanging out… so make sure you reserve your spot at Dania Jai-Alai as soon as possible.
If you need more info, please e-mail me at mhochman@790theticket.com. Or head over to the Dania Jai-Alai website at www.betdania.com. We’ll see you there.
10. TC | July 14th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Thanks Hass, I got the same info from Hoch. I was actually looking for what time to show up if you already have a spot. I guess I can come at 7 or 730 and watch a little Jai-Alai if I got time to kill.

Hey Whore Island President, fag I also met in passing Hall of Famer Jack Buck always nice good guy. As a Cardinal fan he brought me these calls.
“ Smith corks one into right, down the line! It may go…Go crazy, folks! Go crazy! It’s a home run! And the Cardinals have won the game, by the score of 3-2, on a home run by The Wizard! Go crazy! - Calling Ozzie Smith’s walkoff home run in Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series.[4] ”
“ The Dodger right-hander is set and here’s his pitch to Jack Clark. Swing and a long one into left field! Adios, goodbye and maybe that’s a winner! A three-run homer for Clark, and the Cardinals lead by the score of 7 to 5 and they may go to the World Series on that one, folks! - Calling Jack Clark’s 9th inning three-run home run in Game 6 to give the Cardinals the lead and the National League Pennant.
But this is the call by Jack Buck that I think is what I will always remember him by. Yeah the “Go Crazy Folks” Yeah but this because I remember where I was and what I was thinking. I know what I was wearing. I was the greatest momemt in baseball that I had ever seen. A gimpy Kirk Gibson going to the plate and hitting a ONE Handed HR. Here’s the call.
Jack Buck’s call
CBS handled the national radio broadcast of the 1988 World Series, with Jack Buck providing play-by-play and Bill White as the analyst. This was Buck’s call. It begins here with Buck speculating on what might happen if Gibson manages to reach base:
“ … then you would run for Gibson and have Sax batting. But, we have a big 3-2 pitch coming here from Eckersley. Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, 5 to 4; I don’t believe what I just saw! ”
The last sentence is often remembered and quoted by fans. Buck followed it with,
“ I don’t believe what I just saw! Is this really happening, Bill? ”
Buck concluded this amazing feat with this thought:
“ One of the most remarkable finishes to any World Series Game…a one-handed home run by Kirk Gibson! And the Dodgers have won it…five to four; and I’m stunned, Bill. I have seen a lot of dramatic finishes in a lot of sports, but this one might top almost every other one.

Cyn, Lesley Visser is on the Defo show on fridays. I never met her but I don’t think she is a talent. Nice looking woman and I am sure she is nice. So my point is Listen to Defo. That Sid will lose it at poker. He will leave poker and go to Hard Rock and play BJ. I am telling you the guy is ready to jump.
BTW CYN U ROCK. Thanks for the great job you do.
Folks Cyn works for the shown in the backgroud. She makes stuff happen.
26. Dan | July 15th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I met some Mark Hochman fellow. He was really nice..probably cuz he’s ugly as fuck so being nice is really all he’s got. .. I KID! I JOKE! You were nice at the first Jai Alai, Hoch
I met Luis Omar Tapia. He did soccer games for Spanish ESPN and he was great covering Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc … He was really nice and he was very happy that I knew who he was. His daughter is smoking btw

Dan, being a Brave Fan please tell all the Yankee Assheles that Joe Torre is a good manager but NOT a great manager. Does not belong in the Hall of Fame. If you look up overrated in the dictionary you will see Joe Torre. BTW I met him also, when I was like 7 or 8. nice guy but not a Hall of Famer.
29. Hassenpfeffer | July 15th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Oh I am also Fake Bud Clydesdale. But anyone that has a clue would have know that.

I’m excited to see the Golden Mustache. It sounds remarkable. Worthy of the King of Kings.
31. Hassenpfeffer | July 16th, 2008 at 4:41 am
So sad the slots are all full and I don’t have one. I don’t think I can make it there by 6 to get on the list. But I will show up, it’s on the way home.
I yeah I met Tim McCarver, with Joe Torre. Nice guy but hell he was signing autographs at Burger Chef.
Still not sure if I am boycotting AB-InBev. I think I will probably have a couple of Buds at the event and that will be it for beer for a few months.
Oh yeah I do have an asshole radio TV guy I met besides Bobby the Brain. Ron Jacober. Yeah he’s another StL guy. Ron was sportscaster on Channel 5 (NBC) in StL. Ron did Cardinals games with Jay Randolph on the local Cards games. Marlin fans might remember Jay he worked for the Fish in the early days. Jay sucked he always referred to everyone as “such a nice guy”. Anyway I digress. I got arrested at a Blues game for throwing cups at the very rude Chicago Hawk fans. There was almost a riot there. Anyway as STL’s finest (no really a bunch of assholes) were taking us to some small locker room at the old St. Louis Area. My friends and I ran into Ron Jacober and we all say “Hey Ron” and Ron started towards us and then realized that we were in police custody. Then scolded at us and headed in the opposite direction. So Fuck you Ron Jacober you talentless fuck. Hell Jay Randolf made you look like shit and he had no talent outside covering golf. And what the fuck was up with the Chicago fans that night? What rude bastards, usalley the StL folks and Chictown folks are pretty cool? Anyway all charges were dropped because we were charged with “throwing debe on the playing surface” but we weren’t we were just throwing cups at the rude Chicago fans. That’s’ what I told the judge and the charge was dismissed.
So two fuck yous, one to Ron Jacober now of KMOX and the other to Bobby the Brain. And shame on you Bobby for making Ann cry, even if she didn’t give her virginity to me.
BTW: Hoch would someone at the station send Zas to interviewing school? Good god I heard him last night for about 2 mins and gee what a train wreck. Interview 101 you don’t ask a question and then answer it yourself. Geez even Dan knows that.
If the game didn’t go into extra innings I wouldn’t have written as much. Fucken NL just win the damn thing so I can go to bed.

Big MMA night tonight, real MMA.
PPV event with Fedor v. Sylvia and on Spike, the best fighter in the world, Anderson Silva fighting at 205 for the first time in the US.
Thought i’d give the heads up for those who still want to watch some MMA after the EXC debacle. I should’ve posted this earlier in the week.
On a side note, golf continues to not be a sport. 53 year old has been leading a major…’nuff said.

Guys and girls:
I think this is the last blog till vacation is over for the show. So I want to hijack the blog with my own temp blog.
Baseball
As you all know I am from St. Louis a great baseball town. Actually we refer to it as a Beer Town with a Baseball problem. But I don’t want to talk about the Cardinals, Yankees, Mets or Red Sox. I want to talk about OUR home team, the Marlins.
Like me, most of us were fans of another team before we moved to SoFla. I know Hoch is a White Sox Fan and there are Yankee fans here but the song does say root, root for the home team. I know most of us do. So as fans of other teams but now rooting for the home team I want to know what your most memorable Marlin moments are.
For me it started with the first pitch, Charlie Huff with a first pitch strike. Well as an expansion team they did what all expansion teams do, not very well but it was a start. I did take the day off work so I could stay home and see the legend happen I was living in St. Louis at the time. In fact my twin also took the day off so he could watch a new legend of baseball. He was down on the Cardinals after all Joe Torre was the manager at the time.
Next memorable Marlin moment was 1997 at Busch Stadium, St. Louis Missouri. I was dressed in Marlins shirt, shorts and cap in Cardinal territory, and some STL kid about 7 years in age kept looking at me as if I was the devil as I rooted for the Marlins. Anyway Devon White makes a circus catch in center field to rob a Cardinal of a Homerun. I just remember saying to my brothers and the kid that hated me that, that was the ESPN play of the day, and it was.
Games 7 of the 97 World Series, I was living in StL at the time and was a beverage director of an airport hotel. Well closed at 10 pm CST but this was game 7 and the Fish could win. Well it was about closing time and I told the 2 couples that were at the bar that I would stay open till the end of the game. I put 2 bottles of Champagne on ice and said “Normally I close now but since it’s the World Series I would stay open”. Then I lay down the rules if the Fish win we all drink free Champagne if they lose I want you all out of my bar in 2 minutes. Needless to say we all drank Champagne and they guest took the rest of the bottle up to there room.
Jeff Conine’s first at bat as a Marlin in 03 I was there in the stadium. That was really cool to see Mr. Marlin back with the fish.
Game 5 of the 03 Wild Card Play-Offs, Pudge well we all know the story. I was there in the stadium.
Game 6 03 World Series: I wasn’t there but was at friends at a party and when the fish won it was awesome. No one at the party was from S. Florida but they all were fans of the Marlins.
Countless times I have been at the games to witness a Marlin comeback in the bottom of the 9th.
So share your favorite Marlins moment while Hoch is on vacation and yes we all know Zas blows.
39. Whore Island President | July 20th, 2008 at 3:21 am
Hass, were you having a Dan LeBatard moment there. With all your “I was there for that!” moments reminded me of Dan LeBatard. And yes, Hass, you was there for that.
Oh yeah, you have a twin brother? Perhapes I can interest you two in a two for one. Not only do you get my former Cuban cabana boy — Dan LeBatard, but as an added bonus, how about a slightly balding, short executive producer that is always up Dan’s ass — Marc Hochman. But, I gotta warn you. His head smells a lot from being up Dan’s ass so much. What you say? You can have him but you have to figure out how to get the smell out. You want my two for one deal. Deal or no deal? Bad show by the way.
40. manuel | July 20th, 2008 at 3:50 am
I was at opening day, 1993. That was a lot of fun and the stadium was packed and jacked.
Game 4, 2003 WS…Alex Gonzalez walk off 11th inning HR. I couldn’t believe my eyes. This game hardly ever gets pub; but it was amazing.
41. Hassenpfeffer | July 20th, 2008 at 8:34 am
Manuel, Yes I forgot that one. I was there with ya brother. Also on that night The Rocket retired for the first time. That was a great night. Thanks.
42. Hassenpfeffer | July 20th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Sorry King of the Whores if you don’t have a Marlin moment then don’t post. Do you and I don’t what to hear about some gay fantisy of you and Dan watching a Marlins game.
43. cc | July 20th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

44. manuel | July 20th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Great game today. The Marlins have now won 7 of 10 and if Gregg didn’t blow those two games in Colorado, it would be 10 of 13. Nonetheless, we’re tied in the loss column and Josh Johnson looked good again.
I wish they’d bring back the teal caps on Sundays, I was always a fan of those…
MMA Update:
Fedor looked incredible last night making former UFC Heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia tap in 36 seconds. That is sick.
In the UFC, Anderson “Spider” Silva crushed his 205 lb. dayview opponent in about a minute.
Overall, a pretty average night of fighting with the two top p4p fighters annihilating their adversaries.

Yeah the next 10 days will define the season. If the Fish come up big they should have a nice lead in the East. Also 4 games in Chicago could help define the wild card race.

Yeah, you are 100% on the money there Hass.
I’m def a bit concerned with our schedule. Braves, Cubs and Mets is not going to be easy. I’m excited to see Volstad pitch tomorrow though because if he can be what Dontrelle was in ‘03 as a rookie along with Josh, we could seriously be in this thing until the end.
Unfortunately, the pessimist in me is just waiting for the Marlins to fall apart at some point. I hope to be wrong.

Side note JT is gone. He wanted to go to a Super Bowl contender. The Redskins? never thought of them as even making the playoffs. But a second and sixth roud pick good for them.
Lots of scoreboard wathcing. Mark my words the Cubs will not win the Central. They are the Cubs and they will slide. It’s between the Cards and Brewers. Very important the NL Central is for the wild card. Keep an eye on that. The west is an after thought.

Hass I was at game 5 too (Pudge)…in the upper deck, I thought I was going to die that day…the place shook like there was an earthquake and I felt the entire section mvoe up and down…people where throwing water up in the air…the parking lot was packed…it took me hours to get our of there.
cc no ratings…but I would venture to say that with the Marlins doing so good and ____following Lebby he is getting an unfair advantage.
JT gone…ok bye…you want to be with a contender let’s see what you can do…not hating…just whatever…he is getting more radio time on this whole thing then he deserves…show us what you go on the field with a “contender”
Any stadium updates?
