Something Good… By Hoch
July 21st, 2008
I participated in something good on Friday and I wanted to share some of the details with you. We received an e-mail a few weeks ago from a father who had a 5 year old son that had some medical problems. The boy had a liver transplant when he was 6 months old… his body was now rejecting the liver… and there are further complications, all leading to a childhood that’s probably spent more with doctors than playmates. Anyway, the e-mail said that this boy, Justin, really wanted to meet Kimbo Slice. The father e-mailed and asked if we were doing any events coming up where Kimbo would be there. I told him we weren’t, but that I would try and get in touch with Kimbo’s management and see if they had any time to meet Justin.
Team Kimbo could not have been more accommodating. When I told them the situation, they suggested Kimbo and Justin could meet at Boomer’s in Dania Beach and play some video games and have some fun. It took a couple weeks of planning, due to a ridiculously busy schedule that Kimbo Slice has, but the meeting date and time was finally picked.
The father told me Justin was tremendously excited all week. He had watched Kimbo fights on TV with his dad (who happened to be a big mma fan.) Justing would tell his dad that he thought Kimbo could beat the Incredible Hulk. The week leading up to the meeting, Justin asked his dad every morning, “is this the day we meet Kimbo?”
When I met Justin and his father at Boomers, I explained that Kimbo was a very busy guy and he would probably only be able to spend a few minutes with him, but I was sure he’d be able to take a photo with him. About 15 minutes later, Kimbo Slice, his manager, and two others showed up to Boomer’s… and proceeded to spend the next two hours with Justin. Two hours! Kimbo took a genuine interest in Justin, making sure he had enough to eat… making sure he got to play all the games he wanted… making sure Justin felt like a STAR. (And he did.) Kimbo also brought him autographed photos, merchandise, and lots of other great stuff. The entire afternoon was so touching on so many levels.
Justin was on top of the world… His dad told me he doesn’t really get to go to places like Boomers, because of all the immuno-supression drugs that he’s on. It makes it dangerous for Justin to be around a lot of kids (and a lot of germs) because his body would have a tough time fighting off even a minor illness. Justing took tons of photos with Kimbo, and Kimbo played games with Justin for the entire 2 hours. It was pretty amazing to see the power of an individual… Kimbo made this kid feel great, just by spending some time with him. What a great power to have.
I was just blown away by Kimbo doing this for a kid he didn’t even know. Kimbo’s manager was telling me that they get e-mails and letters everyday from sick people looking for help… He said they wished they could help everybody, but obviously they couldn’t. We never mentioned on the air that Kimbo was going to do this for the kid, because that’s not what it was about. We could have turned it into a media circus… There’s so much interest in Kimbo, we could have had every newspaper on site taking photos of Kimbo and Justin and made it into an event… But that’s not what it was about. It was about a super-celebrity badass, Kimbo Slice, taking a couple hours out of his day to make a sick kid feel great for a while.
I wasn’t even going to blog about it or mention it on the air, but Justin’s father asked if I would, so that everyone would know what lengths Kimbo Slice went to to make sure this kid had a great day. I myself have a 4 year old son, and after speaking with Justin’s father for a couple hours, I still can’t imagine the pain one goes through when they have a sick child. It was a truly moving day, an experience I won’t soon forget. A day that made me see Kimbo Slice in a whole new light… Kimbo Nice.

Did you bring any merchandise from horsemuffins.com?
You should feel lucky to have been part of that. The power of Hochamania.

Somebody post a warning when Zas is on at 12, wow
13. King of Loserville | July 25th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Let’s talk sports…can anyone explain to me how the Marlins have based loaded - no outs and the 4,5,6 hitters coming up and they manage one run?
This team is exciting yes…but if you can advance runners and play small ball you can’t win.
0-10 4-5-6 Hitters last night…
Why are host on this station so against playing baseball correctly…do you know why the Marlins lead the league in strike outs? cause they don’t know how to play small ball. This team is not a bunch of pwer hitters they are all following the law of average…eventually everyone will hit homeruns if they are swinging for the fences 1005 of the time.
It doesn’t matter if you win by 1 or 100 runs, they only way to win is to score more runs then your opponents…
14. Hassenpfeffer | July 25th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
The defense is also weak. That doesn’t help either. It’s all about fundamentals. And yes that would include playing small ball and manufacturing runs.
15. manuel | July 25th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
I would like to know on what planet do you EVER bat Ameziega 2nd?? The guy is barely batting in the mid 200s and has an aweful OBP. I don’t care that he can bunt, although I agree that we need some more small ball occasionally, he can’t be the guy that gets that spot…ever.
16. Hassenpfeffer | July 26th, 2008 at 11:31 am
But chicks do dig the long ball.
17. cc | July 26th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Anybody know what station DEFO is on. Freido and Goldie do a good job would be perfect at 7. Did Minnervini used to have a show ?
18. King of Losserville | July 26th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Hass the dig the long ball…but you know what happens…they don’t make the playoffs and the chicks all congregate to talk shit about them…HAHAHA
Hope my girl doesn’t read that…
Does anyone know why Pinto is still in the Majors?
19. manuel | July 26th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Pinto’s ERA is a smooth 2.73. I’ll take that from a 26 year old left handed reliever. He walks way too many guys; but for what we are paying him, I think we’re getting our moneys worth.
20. manuel | July 26th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I would like to formally apologize to Jeremy Hermida as I ripped him on the blog here about 2 weeks ago and man, has he made up for it the last two days.
Here’s to Hermida having a 2nd half of the year like 2007.
21. Hassenpfeffer | July 27th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Tip of the cap to the Hochamaniacs.
This is great, we are all talking baseball. How bout them Marlins.
King LMAO.
Manny forgiven.
Defo is on AM 640 with best morning show on the radio. 6am to 9am.
Hochamaniacs this Bud is for you.
Marlins with a 3 game stint agains the Mets and Cubbies Brewers with 4. It’s going to be another great week in Basesall.
Hoch, I suggested a Dan Le Batard Show night at the ballgame for the kids months ago. I guess that is not happing.WHY? Bring your kid to the ballgame.
22. hoops | July 27th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Props to Cantu as he continues to play solid. To the baseball man Hass, do you think the Marlins make a play for LoDuca again, could catch, 1st or even outfield ?
23. roy jones jr | July 27th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
do the marlins drag anyone out in the street & shoot them if they blow a 5 run lead? they should start.
Nice story Hoch. Hows the horsemuffins.com sales going?
24. cc | July 27th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
King did you hear Zas on Sat ? any ratings
25. Hassenpfeffer | July 28th, 2008 at 3:30 am
hoops, I think the fish will be looking for bullpen help. the loduca thing not sure. The have bats but a good catcher is always a way to shore up a pitching staff.
Roy, shouldn’t the mangaer remove the problem before he blows the 5 run lead?
26. Whore Island President | July 28th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Wow! You finally did a good deed. You deserve a loaded steakhouse burger with the cheese.
27. manuel | July 28th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I want to rant and rave about yesterday’s missed opportunity; but for once, i’m going to reserve my lunacy until after the Mets series. We have a chance to be in first in 3 days (barring what Philly does) and we better damn take the opportunity. The Mets and their over inflated payroll is NOT better than us.
28. Hassenpfeffer | July 28th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Here Here Manuel. I agree. Yeah yesterday pissed me off also.
29. TC | July 28th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Hey guys, I’m a huuuuuuuge Phillies fan. I kinda want to admire the Fish for how efficient they are (sort of like how I admire the A’s and Billy Bean) but since we are in the same division, I just cant. But I guess we all cant agree on one point, FUCK THE METS! Watching you guys destroy Glavine last year to help us clinch the division was great. Hopefully you knock them around this week.
30. manuel | July 28th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
I’m with you there TC, I hate all NY teams so if we can’t win it, then let it be Philly.
31. Hassenpfeffer | July 28th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Yeah, I remember when the Fucken Mets were in the same division as my Cardinals. God I hate those Bastards. The Mets are Pond Scum. and isn’t Fucken the Mets first name.
32. hoops | July 28th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
Not a Philly fan at all except you got to like what the 76ers are doing and great respect for Victorino. This kid I would take any day on my team
33. King of Loserville | July 29th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Did Lebatart call the Marlins the coolest team in South Florida? Can’t bee cool if half of your team takes a crap on themselves…
And the Marlins find yet another way to break all historical baseball analysis…
Mets and Royals this week…if they can take 3 of the next 5, one more from NY they are in a good stop for the home stretch. They are a combined 4-7 against these teams…they have to step it up.
Still 29 games left against the NL East..every game counts…
On Pace for 86 wins as of last night!!
34. cc | July 29th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
King do you still think Krog goes to 7 and the Marlins really miss DTRAIN as he said
35. manuel | July 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
No way they miss D Train. Dontrelle was showing serious signs of suckitude last year and for what he’s making, that just ain’t gonna cut it.
The current staff of Nolasco, Johnson, Volstadt and Olsen is just fine and as soon as they add Anibal; I think we finally have the staff that can at least be middle of the league. C
36. roy jones jr | July 29th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
good point , hass. shoot the choker & then shoot the guy who just sat there & let it happen. this isnt the time for “well at least we rested some of our players for another series.” the marlins dont have that luxury.
37. cc | July 30th, 2008 at 1:47 am
exactly Manuel, the little guy said they would miss DTRAIN
38. Whore Island President | July 30th, 2008 at 2:14 am
What the hell was that on my Cuban cabana boy’s head today on PTI? That was one hell of a pomperdor on his head. It looked like it had legs hiding under it and was ready to run away.
39. jay | July 30th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
when are you going to add the sparano audio to the archuves?
40. Hassenpfeffer | July 31st, 2008 at 5:22 am
Why the hell do the Fish need Manny? They need bullpen help and a catcher. AND someone to teach these guys how to play D. Don’t get me wrong Manny’s a great hitter but you let a vet catcher who hits for average in Pudge go to the Fucken Yankees. What Dombrowski doesn’t want to trade with the Fish anymore because of the D’Train trade? Well he was dumb enough to extend his contract for 2 more years. Does anyone think that maybe Zas was whispering in his ear? “Hey Dave, Dontrell is the next Bob Gibson, lock him up”. Oh wait Zas doesn’t even know who Bob Gibson is.
41. hoops | July 31st, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Hass you are correct. Manny could also ruin the chemistry in the clubhouse. Zas probably does nt know who Gibson was and he does not know hoops as he continues to try and talk
42. manuel | July 31st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Hoops, take your “chemistry” talk outta here. That stuff means squat. Its been proven a million times that leadership, heart, chemistry is all overrated bullshit.
I’m with Hass in the sense that hitting HR’s is not what this team needs. We need bullpen and catching. Defense won’t happen this year and with these players, so we’ll have to live with it.
I must say though, it feels sooooooo sweeeeeeet to take 2 of 3 from the sorry ass Mets.
43. hoops | July 31st, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Chemistry does mean something not everything but this is a young team .Do you not think there are reasons why teams were staying away from Rickey Davis, till he signed with the Clippers.
44. manuel | July 31st, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Because Ricky Davis sucks as a player, none of that other shit like being “selfish” or “disruptive” means a thing. Talent talks, shit walks.
45. manuel | July 31st, 2008 at 8:57 pm
I’m actually glad Manny was not traded here. I truly believe this team can put it together with the acquisition of the formerly injured pitchers.
46. Hassenpfeffer | July 31st, 2008 at 9:00 pm
I am glad he is not come also. I think Torre is trying to put together the team that has kicked his Yankees ass the last few years. Dream on White Joe.
47. hoops | July 31st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Selfish does not mean anything, funny when the 76ers gave up Iverson they played team ball and had a better record. AI is a stud, but selfish had something to do. Agreed that the Marlins will be fine and Riles though enough of Davis to give up a #1 pick
48. manuel | August 1st, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Hoops, you might have to change your name since you don’t have your B-ball stats right. They made the play offs this last year; but that was due to a very weak Eastern Conference. Their record was 40-42…yes, under .500 ball. In 10 years in Philly, the 76ers only missed the playoffs 4 times and that includes the first two years after Iverson was drafted.
Mind you, that is not GREAT; but as was proven with Wade last year and Kobe (after Shaq left) is that one player is not enough to make your team a perennial contender.
So get outta here with your “76ers are better without Iverson because thye played team ball”. Give Iguodala and Andre Miller Iverson and tell me they wouldn’t be better.
I might start calling you Zas jr. from now on…..
49. hoops | August 1st, 2008 at 2:15 pm
I was talking about when they traded Iverson, check your stats did not say they made the playoffs they won something like 15 out of 20 games. They were one of the hottest temas. They got Miller in the trade whcih allowed Iguodala to get more touches. I did not say this year as LOU Williams came in to his own and the additions of Thadddeus were big.
That was a major insult calling me Zas, thanks man
50. manuel | August 1st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I’m just fucking with you bro. All good.
51. hoops | August 1st, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Manuel ,your the man. I love AI as a player and person, actually met him. With LoDuca and Estrada being waved you think the Fish pick um up. Gotta say Zas is unlistanable
52. manuel | August 1st, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Looks like our boy Lebby kicked ass again.
Here’s the shocker:
• The Ticket dominated WQAM at night, largely because of Marlins games. From 7 to 10 p.m., 790’s lead was a 4.1 to 0.5. From 9 to midnight, 790 had a 3.4 (Marlins games, Jonathan Zaslow and sometimes Dos Amigos) to WQAM’s 0.4 ( Damon Amendolara, among others, and ESPN Radio from 11 p.m. to midnight since early June).
53. cc | August 1st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Marlins are a big draw pull them away and ratings tank 7-10 especially with the little Zas
54. Hassenpfeffer | August 1st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Not a shocker at all. Marliks rank in the top 10 in baseball for TV and radio ratings. Zas should be banned from the air.
55. manuel | August 1st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Hoch,
Its nice to hear you on the radio again today. I could tell the show got better immediately as the comedy quotient went up right away as soon as you hit the air.
While you were gone, Lebitz spent the better part of two weeks arguing with Stugotz about Favre and then admitted you were right about Goddell getting involved in that situation.
Go Hochamania!
56. Hassenpfeffer | August 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
It’s good to hear Goldie. I still contend thAR he is the go to guy for hockey in this market. But he is doing a hell of a job with baseeball this morning.
57. hoops | August 2nd, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I agree Hass, Goldie is not just a Hockey guy.I think GuZIO would do a good job and be an upgrade at 7
58. Hassenpfeffer | August 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 pm
What was up with Stugotz this morning on the sindicated show? Thur he was all pissing and moaning that the Fish didn’t get Manny and then this morning he was say that the Red Sox got the better of the deal. WHAT? And geea gvie the Bret Farve shit a rest. Enough already
59. cc | August 3rd, 2008 at 5:45 pm
King of all bloggers have not seen you post.Thought little man puts you to sleep early when on
60. Hassenpfeffer | August 4th, 2008 at 3:45 am
Who’s got the over/under on how many times Madden had to change his underwear today?
61. Hassenpfeffer | August 4th, 2008 at 5:42 am
new link, click on it and vote for the Real Men of Genius.
62. Hassenpfeffer | August 4th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Brett Farve is a joke.
63. manuel | August 4th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Hass,
Syndicated radio show?
64. manuel | August 4th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
I will say this, it was a tough loss to swallow yesterday.
Watching Hermida go 0-4 with 4 k’s and in reverse, Manny going 4-4 with another HR makes me think we may have made a HUGE mistake not getting a guy who can carry a team to the playoffs.
I also must say that I totally hated Freddies decision of taking out Olsen in the bottom of the 6th to PH. I know the bases were loaded; but the way he was pitching, he was going to get to the 8th inning no problem. I dunno, i hate taking out a hot pitcher. If anything, it should’ve been Hanley to PH and not sorry ass over the hill “Gonzo”.
